Boomerang Baba's, Harlingen, Texas

Well, leave it to my Primo, (Raul) to direct me to
a new, fresh, tasty place to grub! If he ever...ever
suggests a place to eat, dollar to a dime it's gonna
be worth it! Boomerang Baba's is located in Harlingen, a little hard to find, but well worth the
trip! This place is Jazzed up like a 50's Diner, with all the simplicity and flavor that is involved in such a place. We were greeted with a genuine smile by a young lady named Julie, which provided my beautiful Bride and I excellent service throughout. Melissa ordered a Cobb salad and soup combo, which was perfectly portioned. The salad cold and crisp, the soup....homemade Broccoli and Cheese soup that was plain kick ass! I ordered The Atomic Burger(of course) This was a nice fresh burger, the meat (1/3rd pound) was well seasoned and had great texture, the wheat bun was slightly sweet and toasted. It was topped with pepper jack cheese and had a generous side of a tangy vinegary Habanero sauce with a nice bite. At my option jalapenos were served on the side as well. I ordered the FRINGS, simply fries and onion rings, both were very good. The fries will take you back to the Rally's days, for those of you old enough to remember. For those that are looking for something different, there are some great sandwiches and wraps on the menu as well, and although I have not tried them, the hand spun smoothies and milkshakes are bound to be exquisite. Now, this awesome little joint can be found by exiting Ed Carey and staying on the frontage road until you come across Hanmore Industrial Parkway. It lies among several little office buildings. It does not look like it belongs there. If you have problems , you can call for friendly directions at 956-425-6887. Give this clean, friendly, tasty joint a try!

Lovin' the food,

Lou

P.S. By the way I was able to snap a shot of the dai;y special which was homemeade Salisbury Steak, with a side salad and some Mashed potatoes, yup, I know what I'll be trying next!

Faby's Mexican Cuisine, Brownsville, Texas

Faby's is located on Central Blvd. right next to Advance Auto Parts in the old motel, where New York Deli used to be. And let me tell you it....is....good! I went there with my great friend Byron, he had already eaten so he just sat by while I gorged myself with a terrific breakfast. I ordered a cup of menudo to start, you can always judge a place by it's menudo. It arrived, had rich color, texture and taste. A good amount of hominy and lotsa pansa made this a treat. There was no shortage of pata in the making of this wonderful menudo! Next I ordered Huevos Divorciados....this plate will make you rise up and slap your grandma! Two eggs, over easy one with a wonderful red sauce and one with an extraordinary green sauce, that's not all, a tantilizing pile of chilaquiles topped with crumbled queso fresco, a nice scoop of barbacoa that was not too greasy, and real refried beans! The tortilla rivals that of the Toddle in, which is one of my favorite breakfast haunts.

The service was great, there are several waitresses that cater to your needs and smile at you like they actually mean it! The place is clean, the atmosphere pleasant. I think this place just jumped to my top 3 breakfast joints in town! Defintely **Lou Approved**, They do have a good lunch menu as well, but I have not gotten that far. So if you want a fantastic breakfast with excellent service, pay Faby's a visit!

Hungry Again,

Lou

Mexican food at the Ice House??

This may not come as a surprise to some of you but I went to lunch at the Ice House. On the way over I had an internal battle, The Tex Mex? Wings? A burger? Shrimp?..Anyway a very stressful drive, but I reached a decision as my truck turned itself in the parking lot...SHRIMP! So I walk in and get a big hello from Charlie "Hey Lou! Here to try the enchiladas?" CRAP! I had it all figured out...I thought, now enchiladas were on the brain, I had to start over. In the end, I went for a 6 piece fried Gulf shrimp with fries, and an enchilada plate. Overindulgence? Nope, it's all in the interest of the GrubHound!

The enchiladas were fresh, filled with cheese topped with an authentic homemade enchilada sauce, topped with more cheese and accompanied by delicious mexican rice , and refried beans that would make grandma smile.

They do this wonderful plate as well as chalupas on Wednesdays only. As with their other specials, (the Chicken fried steak on Thursdays) You might want to hurry, they go fast! By the way, the Shrimp were phenomenal, like only Gulf Caught Shrimp can be!

P.S. I want to thank Charlie and Richard for my afternoon food coma.

Happy and Full!

Mi Casita, Brownsville, Texas

Hello all! I went to lunch with a great friend of mine Kris Wood, and he suggested Mi Casita located next to The Boot Jack on the corner of Hwy 48 and F.M. 802, I had never been there and said sure! (Kris is a fellow food connoisseur, I would trust him with any food recommendation) Upon arriving at a pretty packed little place , we were greeted with a smile. After conferring with my partner in crime we both decided to get the Mi Casita Plate. This hefty plate came with two enchiladas of your choice, a tasty crispy taco, crunchy flauta and a great flour tortilla filled with fajita a little lettuce and tomato rice and refried beans.

First was the teaser, Fideo soup spiced well with a touch of comino, very good. The tostadas and salsa were also very good, the salsa had a pleasant bite. Then the plate, all excellent, the enchiladas were packed with flavor, what was supposed to be crunchy was very crunchy, the beans were actually fried, not just boiled and put in a blender. After knocking out the plate, catching my breath and yearning for a nap, a perfect little cup of cinnamonny rice pudding was placed in front of me. YES! It was well cooked , sweet and creamy, the perfect finish to a great lunch! I would recommend Mi Casita for those who want authentic Brownsville style Mexican food. It was a very good meal, the soup, the meal, and the desert all for around 8 bucks! So if your hungry for a big taste of home try Mi Castita!

With a full belly,

Lou

Just a quick hello to everyone, in last night's recipe for the sirloin I used Pickled Habanero Garlic that I buy at Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse in El Campo, Texas, if you have not stopped here do so! They have some fantastic stuff! Great jerky, sausage, kolaches and other fresh baked breads and desserts. My friend Fito inquired about it. I looked online and it does not look like you can order it. But I'll bet you can give them a call and they would be happy to send you some, also the SweetFire Pickles are incredible!! I did find another site with a similar product, they might even make it for Praseks. Here is the link: www.hillcountryhomestyle.com In the meantime, you can use fresh garlic and add a couple dashes of balsamic vinegar.

Eat well!

Lou
